Nikollë Leonik Tomeu (Leonicus Thomæus, 1456-1531), i njohur në italisht si Niccolò Leonico Tomeo ose siç njihej ndrysh Epirioti, lindi në Venedik nga një familje prej Durrësi. Ai studioi letërsi klasike dhe filozofi në Firence dhe u bë profesor i filozofisë në Padovë, ku thuhet se i ka dhënë mësim, mes të tjerëve, edhe Kopernikut,- e n'atë periudhë gjendej si student edhe humanisti tjetër i madh i Rilindjes, Mihal Trivoli. Më pas u vendos në Venedik dhe dha mësim në Scuola degli Albanesi (Shkolla e shqiptarëve). Tomeu qe një dijetar i shquar klasik, i çmuar mjaft nga Erazmi i Rotterdamit, dhe përktheu veprat e Aristotelit e të filozofëve të tjerë të Greqisë së Lashtë. Në veprat që ka lënë, ai e përmend me krenari prejardhjen arbnore. Në vitet 1504-1524 ishte një ndër intelektualët më të njohur të Venedikut dhe drejtues i shoqërisë “Shkolla e shqiptarëve”, qendër e kulturës shqiptare në mërgim. U largua nga universiteti i Padovës për rreth dy dekada, gjatë së cilave shkoi në Venedik dhe u rikthye më 1524, në Padova, e qëndroj aty deri kur vdiq. Si politolog dhe njohës i mirë i kulturës antike dhe të kohës, Tomeu ka lënë një seri veprash si “Dhjetë dialoget”, “Aristoteli, historia e jetës dhe veprave”, “De Varia Historia”, studime historike dhe filozofike
