Autori austriak i librit ''Shqipëria dhe Shqiptarët v.1910''shkruan që: ''fustanella është veshje shqiptare dhe jo ''greke'' që mendojn ata dhe une mendoja dikur ashtu , por kjo veshje është me plotkuptim vetëm shqiptare edhe aspak ''greke''''...
So war mir kürzlich (in Colbeck: A Summer’s Cruise, 1887 ) das Thema Fustanella begegnet. Den Männerrock hatte ich immer für ein klassisch griechisches Kleidungsstück gehalten. Das denken auch viele Griechen. Ist es aber wohl nicht. Es ist eine südalbanische (toskische) Tracht.

Jean-Léon Gérôme (May 11, 1824 – January 10, 1904) was a French painter and sculptor in the style now known as Academicism. The range of his oeuvre included historical painting, Greek mythology, Orientalism, portraits and other subjects, bringing the Academic painting tradition to an artistic climax.

For artists these unfinished paintings or studies are a treasure trove. Here the pencil outlines of the figures are only slightly hidden behind a thin wash. Eventhough the work is in it's early stages the arnaut has a solid presence and is well grounded, through the cast shadow. The clothing already shows promise of great attention to detail as we are used to seeing in Gërôme's work.
