Miti i ketij Ekioni eshte keshtu:

When Telephassa died, Cadmus buried her, and after being hospitably received by the Thracians he came to Delphi to inquire about Europa. The god told him not to trouble about Europa, but to be guided by a cow, and to found a city wherevershe should fall down for weariness.1 After receiving such an oracle he journeyed through Phocis; then falling in with a cow among the herds of Pelagon, he followed it behind. And after traversing Boeotia, it sank down where is now the city of Thebes. Wishing to sacrifice the cow to Athena, he sent some of his companions to draw water from the spring of Ares. But a dragon, which some said was the offspring of Ares, guarded the spring and destroyed most of those that were sent. In his indignation Cadmus killed the dragon, and by the advice of Athena sowed its teeth. When they were sown there rose from the ground armed men whom they called Sparti.2 These slew each other, some in a chance brawl, and some in ignorance. But Pherecydes says that when Cadmus saw armed men growing up out of the ground, he flung stonesat them, and they, supposing that they were being pelted by each other, came to blows. However, five of them survived, Echion, Udaeus, Chthonius, Hyperenor, and Pelorus.But Cadmus, to atone for the slaughter, served Ares for an eternal year; and the year was then equivalent to eight years of our reckoning.1

Une mendoj se kombinimi i miteve me arkeologjine eshte nje alkimi e rrezikshme dhe perdoret kryesisht nga ata qe duan te spekulojne me historine, ne rastin tone filohelenet, dhe me pas vete grekerit e rinj, qe ju dhurua nje identitet i rreme, dhe ju duhet atyre tani ta heqin kete valle. Persa na perket neve, duhet te ndajme pjeset mitike nga ato historike, dhe duhet te theksojme se kjo "histori" e lashte eshte nje argument shume i keq per te provuar vazhdimesine etnike ne menyre te katerciperishme.

The Chones, on the gulf of Tarentum, are apparently the same people as the Chaones; and although we find no mention of the Thesprotians in Italy, we have there a town Pandosia, and a river Acheron, as in Epirus. There are good reasons for supposing that the Italian Oenotrians, to whom the Chonians belonged, were of the same race as the Epirots.

Ky pasazh i Herodotit nuk i numëron për Greke gjithë ata në veri të lumit Akeron për shkak se asnjëri nuk muarën pjesë në luftërat kundër-persiane (kurse gabimisht e lë Thesprotinë në sferën 'greke') ndërkaq, prej krejt popujve (fiseve) të Epirit vetëm njerëzit e Krotonit pretendonin preardhje akeje. Mendoj se jo. Rreshtimi neper luftera perbri atij ose ketij ""kombi"", nuk behej mbi bazen e atdhedashurise, sepse ky koncept as nuk egzistonte atehere, por ne baze te interesave te sundonjesve. Une po te marre si shembull, vetem faktin se mercenaret greke ne ushtrine persiane, ishin me shume si numer se sa greket ne ushtrine Aleksandriane, kur ata u perplasen se bashku. Eshte nje kurth i madh barazimi i konceptit "komb" te lashtesise me ate qe ne kuptojme sot. Per me teper Herodoti eshte autori me kontradiktor ne bote per tu cituar, dhe keshtu me i papershtatshmi.

The Iapyges, the Messapians and the Chonians probably left the eastern coasts of the Adriatic for Italy during this period. The name of the last suggests some kinship with the Chaonians of the southern shores of Albania.

Befolkning og historie

Befolkningen var væsentlig Illyrer. Mod syd anlagde grækere, særlig dorer, kolonier og gennem dem fik de egentlige indbyggere nogen kultur. Det egentlige land var delt i mange småstater, blandt hvilke Molosserne fik den største betydning. Den berømte Pyrrhus (død år 272 f.Kr.) gjorde Epeiros til et mægtigt kongerige og førte krige i udlandet. Efter hans død forfaldt kongedømmet og Epeiros blev en forbundsrepublik. År 168 f.Kr. hjalp Epeiros Kong Perseus af Makedonien mod Romerne, men som straf blev Epeiros Romersk provins. 1450 kom Epeiros under tyrkisk herredømme. I 1913 blev området forenet med Grækenland og indbyggertallet i dag er ca. 340.000.
